A skill.md file is a structured Markdown document that defines how an AI model should behave for a specific task. It includes a description of the AI's role, step-by-step instructions, output format guidelines, example interactions, and constraints. Think of it as a system prompt template you can reuse across any GPT or AI system.

After downloading or copying your skill.md file, paste the content into the 'System Prompt' or 'Instructions' field of your GPT configuration. In ChatGPT, go to 'Configure' when creating a custom GPT and paste it in the instructions box. The AI will then follow the defined skill behavior in all conversations.

A great skill file has four key elements: (1) A clear role definition that tells the AI who it is and what it specializes in. (2) Specific step-by-step instructions the AI should follow. (3) Output format guidelines so responses are consistent. (4) Explicit constraints telling the AI what to avoid. The more precise and specific you are, the better the AI will perform.

When you fill out the Create form, your inputs are sent to Claude (Anthropic's AI model) which generates a well-structured skill.md file following best practices. Claude analyzes your description, goals, and any instructions you provide to craft a comprehensive skill file. Generation typically takes 5–10 seconds.

Yes! Visit Browse Skills, find a skill you like, and click 'Copy'. Then paste the content into any text editor to customize it for your needs. You can also use a preset as inspiration when filling out the Create form — describe how you want it to differ, and the AI will generate a tailored version.

Skill.md files work anywhere you can paste a system prompt: ChatGPT Custom GPTs, Claude Projects, Gemini Gems, Microsoft Copilot Studio, and any platform with an API that accepts a system message. The Markdown format is universal — any AI system that can read text will understand it.

No account is required for Phase 1. You can browse, generate, copy, and download skill files freely. Creating an account (coming soon) will let you save your generated skills, build a personal library, and share skills with the community.

The version field (e.g. '1.0.0') lets you track iterations of a skill. When you refine a skill file after testing, increment the version number so you always know which version is active in your GPT. We recommend following semantic versioning: major changes bump the first number, minor refinements bump the second.
